Lincoln Public Schools has joined forces with the Food Bank of Lincoln to promote the first annual BackPack Extra Mile Walk. Kids are the most important and valuable asset we have and the BackPack program provides weekly food filled backpacks to families in need. The Backpack Extra Mile Walk is a wonderful way to get some exercise while promoting physical activity in a fun family environment and raising money for a worthy program.
For the past five years, Lincoln Public Schools Business Affairs Division adopted the Lincoln Metro American Heart Walk as its annual community service project. All of LPS got behind this project and did an amazing job of raising funds for the American Heart Association. This year we bring our efforts even closer to home by creating and supporting the BackPack Extra Mile Walk which will help raise funds for our own LPS children helping families meet a basic need—food. During the week, students on free and reduced lunch are provided nutritious breakfasts and lunches at school. A weekend can be a long time to go without food.
By participating in the walk, you are taking the first step towards fighting hunger in our community. Participants show they support the children of Lincoln and are dedicated to making a difference in their well being.
This is Lincoln Public Schools' first year in creating and adopting the BackPack Extra Mile Walk as its annual community service project. We hope the participation in this walk far exceeds that of the previous year's Heart Walk. Last year Lincoln Public Schools had over 1,650 walkers and raised over $43,000. Think of the good that kind of support will do for hungry children in our community.
